Overview launches new motor solution for biometric border control kiosks

Biometric border control motor

  • New border control kiosks needed to meet EU requirements for land, sea and air points of entry.
  • Precise motion servo motors allow more accurate facial recognition.
  • Motors already delivered to border control operation in Iceland.

Overview, the leading specialist in the design, manufacture and support of advanced sensor pointing technologies has announced a new servo motor solution for the biometric border control market.

The company, which is based in Woking, and which was recently awarded the Queen’s Award for Innovation, has used its expertise in designing motors with fine movement capability to produce a precision servo motor that allows for greater accuracy in border control kiosks.

Graham Jones, CEO at Overview, says: “The particular challenge for this application is to be able to manage facial recognition of people of different heights when standing in front of the kiosks. We have been able to develop accurate camera positioning sensor technologies that allow for a small vertical movement range of just 15°, while maintaining camera picture accuracy.”

Using its engineering and technical capabilities, Overview has developed a small, compact motor, based on its current standard Leto design. When combined with customer bespoke programming it allows the revised motor to operate with a narrow up and down tilt motion. Overview has already supplied motors to operational kiosks in the field.

“This typifies the projects we most enjoy developing for clients at Overview,” commented Graham Jones. “To be able to use our servo motor expertise for such a precise and important application allows us to demonstrate our engineering and commercial capabilities.”
